Get your Pirate flag!

Today we are sharing an awesome post published by our good friends from Startup Pirates. Check it out:

Today we are sharing a message from André Jordão, a pirate who attended theStartup Pirates @ Lisboa in February 2012. During the program André and his team (Miguel Ferreira and José Mendonça) developed Foodzai and they actually won. Foodzai is an online platform that connects amateur chefs with foodies. It’s something like a “peer to peer cooking”. A couple weeks after attending Startup Pirates @ Lisboa they got a lot of national press and have been nominated as one of the top 5 portuguese startups to keep an eye on by a national major tech blog (tek sapo)!

Here is his message about Startup Pirates:

“Will you be a creator or just a consumer?
Put your heart into something. Say something that no one else dares to say.

At Startup Pirates you greet every speaker with an ARRRRG. Because something cool is going to happen. Always.
Many VIP entrepreneurs will talk to you as a peer and give you a cutting insight.
The talks are inspiring. One of the best talks I ever saw live… was at Startup Pirates.
You boost your networking. Actually, you boost your spirit.
I would swear sometimes I heard Hans Zimmer as background music.

Startup Pirates forces you to think. What it takes to be a pirate? Not only a brave mindset but also and mainly the right point of sail. If you can find that… dolphins will come to you.

An intensive and exhausting week… but what you get, boy, is something really priceless.
In the month following the Pirates our team made the best startup acceleration program in Portugal, was considered one of the five most promising portuguese ideas, had requests for interviews and is preparing the first release of the platform.

But the most important of all: we know we will never take our pirate flag down.

ARRRG!”

The most original Pirate is…

The most original Pirate is… (drum roll) José Mendonça!!
José was the winner of our challenge and he won a 50% discount on the participation fee. We think his text is creative but we really, really like his photo!
Congratulations José. You are a true Pirate! Arrrrrrrrr
Thank you to all who participated and here’s the text and photo that led our Pirate to victory :)

“Ahoy! I grew up hearing the tales of the old sea-dogs, brave sailors who left the comfort of the land to travel through uncertain waters. They set sail with nothing but a small boat and a crazy idea and by the time they returned they had gathered fortune and fame. And thus their stories became my dreams! I longed to have my own adventures! And I thought of joining… the Navy.
But there are no adventures in the Navy! You just patrol the coastline and never venture into the open sea… To follow another’s orders is not enough for me! I want a world with no limits!
What I want is to be a Pirate! A bold sailor, free to choose my destiny, the route and my crew! A bountiful loot is good, but for that I care not! What I want is the adventure, the experience of the journey and the company of other fellow Pirates. What I want is to leave my own X in this world’s map! Aye!
Yo ho ho, a pirate’s life for me!”

Application deadline extended until January 20th

Ahoy Pirates!

We have received a lot of requests for more time, so we have decided to extend the applications deadline until January 20th.

This way we can give everyone working on their applications some breathing room! And with 5 more days to apply you have more time to prepare a pirate video presenting yourself.

Don’t forget that if you send a video with your application, your participation fee will only be 100€, if you’re selected.
If you already sent your application without a video, you can still send us a video until January 20th.

We also have a challenge going on for the most original Pirate. Send us a small text explaining why you rather be a Pirate than join the navy and the most creative text will win a 50% discount on the participation fee.

Put your eye patch on and grab your camera!

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a video is worth a million and that’s why we decided to reward those who add a video to their application. Send us a video showing your Pirate spirit and we won’t give you a bottle of rum (at least not yet) but your participation fee will be only 100€ – which was the Early Bird fee that ended on January 8th.
The video can be about whatever you want, as long as you are in it and there’s something Pirate about it.

This is great news right? So what are you waiting for?
Lights, sound, action and start shooting your Brave, Crazy, Pirate video!
